Dan Ward – Twas a Dev’s Christmas: A Holiday Ode to the Open Source Community

“Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Many creatures were stirring, many rabblers roused.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
And devs were all flustered and filled with despair.

They were not all nestled and snugged up in beds;
For too many frameworks danced on in their heads;
It always did seem as if once one was learned,
Frameworks were displaced upon every turn.

No matter the effort or bestest intentions,
No matter the tools, tricks, guides, or extensions,
Even when we are sinking in all our attentions,
Answering all reddits, retweets, and mentions

There’s just way too many new trends to endure.
How could any dev hope to ever be sure
The solutions they’re using will keep their renown,
And not be undone by the new guy in town?

I pondered these things with a cat on my lap
Ready for sleep, having downed a night cap
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Assumed a raccoon had knocked over the trash,
When what to my bleary red eyes did appear,
But a miniature sleigh and eight tech rein-deer,

With a little old driver so lively and quick,
I knew without googling it was dev patron St. Nick.
More rapid than quantum computing they came,
And he fixed his rimmed glasses, and called them by name:

“Now, Angular! now, Vue! now Riot and Ember!
On, Polymer! on, A-Frame! on, React and Flutter!
To the top of the GitHub! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!”

The year had brought things that were shiny and new
Each under the tree for all devs to review:
CSS Grid spec has come! And React v. 16!
and since Angular’s so cool its still in between

Deciding which version it will be after now,
Be it 10 or 15 or 700 somehow.
CSS in JS is the rage for good reason;
Who’d think putting styles in scripts’d have a season?

We’ve seen React Native mature and take flight,
And Expo bridge gaps to make dev a delight
With live-reload-JavaScript/Native/Web apps
(And even an Apple TV app perhaps!)

Tech Santa unfurled his loot bag of new techs,
All under the Tech Xmas tree with tech specs
That match or exceed the highest demand
Of every developer, in every land.

Tech Santa brings goodies to us all year round,
Through the hard work of good natured devs who abound
With a desire to code for the Open Source crowd
And Pull Request code proudly into the cloud!

May this be a salute to those who spend their free hours,
Hacking, refact’ring, making their code also ours.
May this be a wish to hackers, big and small,
Happy Holidays and Merry Xmas to each of you all!
